Red dyed diesel questions
What is red dyed diesel?
Red dyed diesel, also called off-road diesel or farm diesel, is diesel fuel with a red dye added to show that no road fuel tax has been paid on it. It’s sold for off-road use: tractors and farm equipment, construction machinery, generators, heating and some boats.
Is off-road diesel different from regular diesel?
Usually the fuel itself is the same ultra-low-sulfur diesel sold for trucks and cars. The differences are the red dye and the taxes: off-road diesel skips the federal excise tax of about 24 cents a gallon and usually the state road-fuel tax, so it costs less.
Can I put red diesel in my truck?
Not in a vehicle you drive on public roads. Inspectors can check fuel tanks for the dye, and federal penalties start at $1,000 or $10 a gallon, whichever is more, on top of any state fines. There are a few narrow exemptions: see IRS Publication 510 and your state’s fuel tax agency.
Where can I find red diesel pumps near me?
Search your town or ZIP code on the map, use your phone’s location, or pick your state below. You’ll find farm co-ops, truck stops and gas stations with a separate red diesel pump, cardlock fueling sites and marinas. Some suppliers only deliver in bulk to your farm or job site.
What is a cardlock?
An unattended fueling site, often open around the clock, where you pay with a fleet or cardlock account instead of at a register. Many cardlocks sell off-road diesel. You’ll need an account with that network to buy fuel there.
How do I know a listing is up to date?
Each listing shows where it came from and when a visitor last confirmed it. Call ahead before you travel, and use Still sells off-road diesel or Report a problem on a listing to keep the map accurate.
